Tigers Sign Two Young Dominican Pitchers

The Hanshin Tigers announced on February 29 that they have signed two young pitchers from the Dominican Republic to development player contracts. Under these rules, they will not be permitted to play in top squad games until they are deemed worthy of having their contracts restructured and they become one of the 70 players on the protected list.

Introducing… Anthony Martinez

Born January 10, 2000, in the Dominican Republic. He stands 190 cm (6’3″) tall and weighs 79 kg (174 lbs). He throws and bats right. He last played in MiLB with the Chicago Cubs organization. Here are his comments upon his signing:

First of all, I want to thank everyone who has contributed to giving me this wonderful chance, especially my family who always encourages me every step of the way. I also want to express my gratitude to my new family, the Hanshin Tigers organization and its fans. I look forward to playing in front of you and being encouraged by your passionate cheering as I continue to play the game I love. Let’s have a great time together!

He will wear #132 for now.


Introducing… Jose Betances

Born October 17, 1999, in the Dominican Republic. He stands 183 cm (6’0″) tall and weighs 102 kg (225 lbs). He throws and bats right. He last played with the Gary SouthShore RailCats in 2023 (independent ball). Here are his comments upon signing with the team:

I want to thank the Hanshin Tigers organization and everyone involved with the team from the bottom of my heart for this wonderful chance to become part of the team. My goal is to put on a good performance and stay injury-free, helping the team to victory. I also want to say hi to the passionate Hanshin Tigers fan base. I hope to put on a performance that is worthy of your cheering. Looking forward to seeing you all.

He will start his time with the Tigers wearing #131.
