Note: Javy Guerra speaks Spanish as his native language, so his answers are essentially an English translation of the Japanese interpretation of his original answer. There may be slight discrepancies between what he said and what I have written here.

―Please tell us how you’re feeling right now.

JG: I’m happy to be here, and I’m truly delighted to have encountered a new city and new companions.

―You arrived in Japan yesterday, correct? How did you feel when you arrived in Japan?

JG: I thought the city was very beautiful as I looked down from the airplane. I spent the end of the flight thinking about how beautiful it was.

―Are there any places you’d like to visit in Japan?

JG: I’d like to visit various cities, but if there are places like aquariums or transportation hubs, I’d love to check them out.

―It’s your second day in Japan. Have you met with your teammates yet?

JG: I just met with two American teammates. They welcomed me warmly, so I think we can build a good relationship from here.

―Please tell us your impression of Japanese baseball.

JG: I played against Taiwan as part of Team Panama in the WBC last year, but I didn’t play against Japan. But I have the impression that there are a lot of different types of batters. I guess since I haven’t played against them, it’s more of a visual impression than anything.

―Do you feel comfortable with NPB balls?

JG: I’ve used them in the bullpen and in batting practice in Panama, so I think I can use them without any problems.

―You were apparently in contact with Mieses. Did you have any discussions since signing with the Tigers?

JG: I’ve known him as an opponent for a while, so we’ve been talking about the team and teammates even before I signed with the team.

―Mieses speaks Spanish just like you do. Is it reassuring for you to have a teammate like that?

JG: It’s very reassuring to have him around, and it means I won’t be alone, so in that sense, it’s really good. But since I’m in Japan, I also want to learn Japanese.

―Are there any Japanese words or phrases you’d like to learn or like?

JG: Today, when I ordered at Starbucks, I used Japanese to say “here” (koko) and “thank you” (arigato gozaimasu).

―Please tell us about your strengths.

JG: I have a good fastball and sinker that dips well, and I also have a slider that’s like a cut fastball. I throw those three with confidence. I also want to acquire a fourth pitch, so I want to work on that through practice.

―Are you good at batting?

JG: I have a good swing, so I’m ready.

―If you were to enter the batter’s box, what kind of batting would you like to do?

JG: I want to enjoy it, and since I’ve played infield before, I think I can approach it without any problems. I’m looking forward to having a chance to get into the batter’s box.

―Please tell us what kind of performance you want to achieve as a pitcher.

JG: I want to be prepared to perform at 100% wherever I’m needed and contribute to the team every day.

―If you have any goals in terms of numbers or records at this stage, please let us know.

JG: I just want to give 100% effort every day.

―Is there anything you’re looking forward to as a player or in your personal life in Japan?

JG: For now, I’m more excited about going to various stadiums and facing different batters.

―Do you have a favorite Japanese food?

JG: I haven’t had Japanese food yet, since I just arrived, but I would like to try the local sushi if possible.

―What kind of nickname were you called or known by in America?

JG: When I was with the Padres, they called me “Super Javy” or “Guerrita.”

―Would it be okay for fans to call you the same thing in Japan?

JG: I’m fine with using my name as it is, or any name you want to call me.

―The Hanshin Tigers have a lot of fans in Japan. How do you feel about the fans’ support?

JG: It’s very encouraging. I think having fans cheering for me while I’m pitching really supports me, so I’m very happy.

―Finally, please give a message to all the fans.

JG: I really appreciate all the warm support and comments from everyone since my decision to join and since arriving at the airport. Thank you very much.
