Game 6 vs. Dragons: We Beat Ourselves

Game 6 vs. Dragons: We Beat Ourselves
April 6, 2018

For the third straight year, Fujinami got the home opener at Kyocera Dome. For the third straight year, he threw himself into all sorts of trouble.

Starting Pitchers: Shintaro Fujinami (0-1, 7.20 ERA) vs. Shinnosuke Ogasawara (0-1, 7.50 ERA)

 1

Leadoff walk. Stolen base. Fujinami throwing error on sacrifice bunt. Wild pitch. He showed three kinds of lousy throwing to the first three batters.

Fortunately, their guy’s control wasn’t awesome, either. Hiroki Uemoto walked to first, and then Ogasawara missed his spot against Yoshio Itoi. Can’t do that against veterans, kid…

Tigers 2, Dragons 1

The game remained really quiet until…

Infield hit – our manager requested a video review, but the runner barely beat out the throw. A hit and a bunt later, they have runners on second and third with two outs. But Fujinami walked two straight, bringing the tying run home. Fujinami’s final line: 4.2 IP, 82 TP, 4 H, 3 BB, 2 R, 2 K, 1 E, 1 WP. Tsuyoshi Ishizaki got a big strikeout with the bases still juiced to keep this one knotted up.

Back-to-back hits from 007 (Uemoto & Itoi) put two guys in scoring position and no outs. Rosario popped up to first. Fukudome grounded out to pitcher. Ohyama grounded out to short. No runs score.

Suguru Iwazaki threw the seventh, but his luck ran out here. With one out, two straight Texas Leaguers put runners on the corners despite great pitching. Then another single squeaked through the right side of the infield. I think he was mad after that, because he struck out the next two guys.

Easily the most maddening part of the whole game, which has seen its share of horrible moments. Yusuke Ohyama leads off with a double. Instead of trying to get a rally going with your best clutch hitter due up, Tomoaki Kanemoto calls for a bunt. And so with one out and a pinch runner on third, the Wacky One calls for another bunt to bring the runner home. But the bunt went to pitcher, who gloved it home… and the catcher tagged our guy and still threw out bunter Ryutaro Umeno at first. Game over. And guess what – Kanemoto blamed Umeno for not making the bunt. Classless.

Final Score: Chunichi 3, Hanshin 2. LP: Iwazaki (0-1). Team Record: 3-3-0
