The Tigers have been playing excellent baseball in the past month or so. Losses were few and far between, and series losses were becoming so rare, they were more like mythology than real life. But during this particular weekend, the team had uncharacteristically poor fundamentals. Two errors and two (or three, depending on how you count them) base running mistakes in each of the first two games led to consecutive losses. Nineteen-year-old Keito Mombetsu was also not too sharp in his first start of 2024. But thanks to some outstanding hitting and defense from Koji Chikamoto the team avoided a series sweep and got their eighth straight win on Children’s Day (May 5).
